Studio Manager 7.7 New Features

RELEASED AUGUST 7, 2006

FileMaker 7, 8 and 8.5 Compatible

Since the release of Studio Manager 7.6, we've been tweaking it and have made small refinements here and there. Version 7.7 focuses on increasing the functionality of Job Specs. You can now: (1) Have Multiple Sets of Job Specs, (2) Save any set of Job Specs you Create as a Set to use again in the future, (3) Copy the job specs from a previous job to a new job (4) Duplicate a set of Job Specs and then modify them and save them under a new name and (5) Delete unused specs.

MULTIPLE SETS OF JOB SPECS

All Jobs are Not Created Equal

Version 7.6 introduced an architecture for Job Specs. Version 7.7 greatly increases the functionality. First stop. Add flexibility.

Wouldn't it be nice to have different sets of job specs for different types of jobs? Rather than leave big gaping holes and have to include all sorts of one-size-fits-all specifications that only apply to certain kinds of jobs.

Now you have unlimited sets of specs. As many as you want to define to work in your kind of business. Maybe there are five kinds of jobs that you do and maybe there are 50. You decide how specific you want to get. Then just pick the kind of job you need specs for and fill in the custom-tailored list. And print to pdf or hard copy.

SAVE A GOOD SPEC SET FOR FUTURE USE

You Don't Have to Reinvent the Wheel Each Time

Studio Manager 7.7 comes with a Job Types screen and room to set up a set of job spec labels for each type. You might start with a single generic set of specs - that's still available. But now, you are doing an advertisement and you want to specify the publication, the issue, the size, the placement, the date of publication and more. If you like, just edit or delete the specs in the generic set that don't apply and when you are done with your masterpiece, just save it as your Advertisement set for next time you've got an ad to place.

Job Types Screen

Of course, you can insert items in your list of specs where you want them. And when you actually use a spec set, feel free to insert additional comments in between existing specs. You may need to elaborate or add a clarification that gets attention with a special heading. Add your extra comment in a second or two and move on.

*BORROW* SPECS FROM OTHER JOBS

They're doing that job again...

Get Job Specs ButtonOK. You already did this drill once. Why do it again? Just find last year's job and copy its specs into your new Re-Do job. That's quick. No mistakes. No time wasted fiddling. And, if you are at all familiar with FileMaker, you know that you can find an old job in an instant.

This trick also comes in handy when you haven't taken the time (in all your spare time) to set up a set of specs for the job you are doing right now. Just find a similar job and *borrow* its specs. Make a few edits and you are done.

DUPLICATING SPEC SETS

Crank Out a Bunch of Spec Sets in an Hour or Less

Import Specs ButtonYou are the someone who likes to be prepared. So, you've gone over to the Job Types screen and want to set up Job Specs for all the kinds of jobs you do most often.

What you do is, go to the Job Type you want and click the Import Specs button and choose from all the spec sets you've already created. Select the type that most closely resembles the job type you are working on. Suck those specs in and make a few edits. Done!

DELETING OUT THE BLANK SPECS FAST

Click the Delete button...

Delete Blank Specs ButtonYou select the type of job and get the standard specs for that job type. You enter in all the information you have and a couple items don't apply. Maybe several don't apply and you want them outta there. Just one click will eliminate the extraneous headings from your specs this job.

EXTRA TIP: PRINTING SPECS FOR VENDORS

This might come in handy.

Sometimes you may have multiple vendors who are going to work with you on a different parts of your job. What you can do is include specs for them in your job specs. Then print the specs. When you get to the preview, cancel and then omit any specs (Cmd-T) that don't apply to the vendor's work for you. Preview again to make sure it is right and then print or save to pdf.
